Why is WILD Salmon so important? Nutrition!
Farm raised salmon do not migrate from fresh water rivers to the ocean and back again. That means they are fat! However the proportion of beneficial Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in farm raised salmon is much lower. Also wild salmon are not treated with antibiotics, fed gluten enhanced feeds or exposed to pesticides like farm raised fish may be.
The next time you are in the store take a look at the salmon. Most wild salmon has naturally occurring carotenoids such as astaxanthin which results from the fish eating a diet of microalgae. This microalgae is used to produce DHA for human infant formula and it naturally provides a bright orange color to the fish meat. Farm raised salmon are fed a synthetic pigment to turn the meat pink. Don’t be misled with terms such as “real,” “flavored,” “Norwegian” or “Atlantic” salmon, if it doesn’t say “WILD” it probably isn’t.
